To clarify my last status: Rappers need DJs more than ever in the modern music industry. BUT..... A rapper cannot imagine that all it takes to break their music is giving it to a DJ then sitting around while the music spreads on its own. The artist must be active in fan outreach and growth of following. The artist must be the MOST ACTIVE person in their campaign. When the artist is active in fan building & has committed the time & energy necessary to establish a following - they can then PARTNER with DJs & other artists who have a similar size or bigger following. An artist starting from zero MUST pay those with bigger followings to help break his/her music....OR.... consistently commit the time & effort themselves to growing their own following. So........instead of coming into the music biz paying a DJ to host your mixtape - my suggestion is that you spend your money building your following & establishing the foundation for your career. You need DJs to break your record - theres no way around that....you also need to be experienced enough pushing your own music to know which DJs are worth paying & which ones you can work with to help build BOTH of your followings. An artist with no following gotta pay $15,000 for DJ Drama or Funkmaster Flex to host their mixtape. Hoodrich DJs, Bigga Rankin, DJ Rell, Infamous Da Missin Link, Coalition DJs - all these DJs charge to host mixtapes because of the size of their following. Artists with a large following like T.I. or Future or Rich Homie Quan - or even less popular artists like Trae the Truth, Alley Boy, Ar-Ab & others will charge lesser known DJs for drops & hosting. Im not saying dont pay DJs -- Im saying put yourself in position to work with bigger names at a discount I remember when every DJ wanted Jiggaman Makeem Get Loose & Mike Beezie & Noonie Junior & Courtney K Crouchet & Antavio Johnson & Yessi KnoSleep Vizcaino to either pay or not get played -- those artists worked & worked & worked and stayed consistent until they couldnt be ignored. They are all still working & growing - and as they do they build relationships that help them get exposure based on hustle NOT pay. Money is necessary to succeed in the music biz. You gotta invest in yourself & pay for certain services. At the same time, money isnt the solution to your lack of success. Success in the music biz also requires consistency, knowledge, hustle, dedication & talent. Everybody sellin a service dont deserve a paycheck. The only way youll know who to pay & why - is by getting out there & working & learning & building & growing. No one else can ensure your success. Thats YOUR responsibility. #Authentic
