To clarify the situation with the senior chihuahua found today. The gentleman that called in the dog at first was going to fib in order to get his dog help that he could not afford. He had called a vet and they told him he had to have money up front ( I do not know what vet). However, the mans beliefs and conscience could not allow him to not tell the truth so he called us back and told us that a family member had taken the dog and apparently not been caring for it properly or the dog has become very ill and had dropped weight drastically so when he found out he took the dog back and has been feeding him and doing all he could do to nurse him back to help to no avail. He did not know where to turn and did not want the dog to suffer so he called and said he had found him in the hopes that we would be able to help him. I believe this man was trying to do the right thing for the animal and we hold no ill will toward him. Bottom line is he cared enough to seek help in the only way he knew how and now the dog will receive the care he needs. Hopefully, he will recover but if it is beyond repair or a terminal illness is causing the weight loss he will be humanely released from his suffering if the vet feels it is the humane course of action. Thank you for all the caring comments. If anyone wants to help OCFA we are always in need of money as we are unfounded Nd operate solely on donation. We also need reliable volunteers to help operate the shelter.
