To drone or not to drone- that is still the question for the Kenyan government. Today is Conservation Heroes’ Day, for those who dedicate their lives and others who have paid the ultimate price protecting Kenya’s natural resources. Many lives and animals can be saved with modern surveillance technology like UAVs aka drones. The Kenya government has put a ban in place on private sector drones to secure an area where 4 of the 5 remaining Northern White Rhinos are found. A drone allows smart surveillance and security in the most complex and dynamic of environments. Conservation officers can maintain their concealed status, from a position of safety. With face recognition programs poachers can be identified without risking human lives and relevant action taken, hopefully before it happens. In the future, footage of an incident recorded from the drone may also be used to identify offending individuals, who often live nearby, and can be held up as evidence in court. The deterrent factor alone could have a significant impact on poaching incidents.. While the sensors are tweaked, the screws tightened and the wires adjusted, wildlife conservationists everywhere can prepare themselves for a revolution.” Read the article and see the amazing footage from a safari taken by a drone, a poachers worst nightmare.
