To enter Mocambo, the iconic restaurant just off Calcuttas tony - TopicsExpress

To enter Mocambo, the iconic restaurant just off Calcuttas tony Park Street, is to step back in time. From its red leatherette sofas and its turbaned service personnel, who offer exemplary service to its menu, very little has changed since its inception in 1956. Guests from all strata of Calcuttans throng here, as they have done for decades now, for the classic Continental style fare not available anywhere else. The only missing thing is the live band, which used to play contemporary dance numbers from waltzes to tango to rock n roll. Mocambo had captured the imagination of dance loving Calcuttans with its glass dance floor, which remained crowded till 1980s ( as described by some of the old service personnel there ), when the band was discontinued and the space was cleared for the diners. Dishes created by original Chef Managee Antonio Prandhe, who ran the restaurant from its inception to 1970s, are marked as heritage dishes on the menu. These include grilled chicken with wine sauce, chicken or fish baked in cheese sauce, vegetable lasagne, baked vegetables and chicken or fish roulades : typically, the kind of food the expatriate community of the colonial era liked to eat. The current best sellers and my favourites are Prawn Cocktail, Chicken Tetrazzini, Chicken a la Kiev, Beckty a Belle Meunière, Chicken Chipolata etc.
