To everyone asking for my opinion on Concordia making the 10 Most - TopicsExpress

To everyone asking for my opinion on Concordia making the 10 Most Dangerous Cities in Kansas list released by Home Security Shield: I was automatically leery of the report once I saw it contained a disclaimer noting its figures are not the most accurate understanding of crime rates, suggesting that their readers research further on their own. So I did. According to the 2012 FBI Uniform Crime Report (based solely on offenses known to law enforcement), Concordia reported 23 aggravated assaults in 2012, as well as 166 larceny-thefts. Based on the calculations as used by this website, you have a 1-in-28 chance of being a victim of an aggravated assault or larceny-theft in Concordia. Admittedly, this is not good. But it should be noted that 30 other cities in Kansas reported larger cases of aggravated assaults. And 40 cities in Kansas reported more larceny-theft cases than Concordia. Heres the flaw in the system: This website has chosen to compare aggravated assaults and larceny-thefts to other major crimes like murder, forcible rape, robbery, burglary, motor-vehicle theft and arson, as if all crimes are equal. As it turns out, you have a higher chance of being murdered in Arma, Dodge City, Edwardsville, Junction City, Leawood, Lenexa, McPherson, Merriam, Mission, Overland Park, and Salina. None of these communities made the most dangerous cities in Kansas list. (Concordias murder total: 0) It turns out you have a better chance of being robbed in Abilene, Andover, Atchison, Augusta, Basehor, Bonner Springs, Chanute, Chetopa, Colby, Derby, Edwardsville, El Dorado, Ellinwood, Emporia, Fairway, Galena, Garden City, Gardner, Goddard, Hays, Haysville, Hesston, Iola, Junction City, Lansing, Lawrence, Leavenworth, Leawood, Lenexa, Liberal, Lindsborg, McPherson, Merriam, Minneapolis, Mission, Mission Hills, Mulvane, Newton, Olathe, Ottawa, Overland Park, Park City, Prairie Village, Pratt, Salina, Shawnee, Spring Hill, Ulysses, Wellington, and Wellsville. None of these communities made the most dangerous cities in Kansas list. You have a better chance of being raped in Ellinwood or Osawatomie. You have a better chance of being the victim of arson in Bonner Springs or Valley Center. You are more likely to have your car stolen if you live in Atchison or Wellington. You are more likely to be on the wrong end of a burglary in Chanute or McPherson. I barely looked at these statistics, but at quick glance it wasnt hard to find a list of communities where you are at greater risk. And once again, none of these communities made the most dangerous cities in Kansas list. You want my advice: lock your doors. My other advice: Stay away from business websites designed to make you feel unsafe so they can sell you home surveillance and security equipment. Home Security Shield just wants your business.
