To everyone who cares about the birds in the Oxford Lagoon, first of all, thank you for liking the facebook page: Friends of Oxford Lagoon Thanks for making calls. Unfortunately Mr. Don Knabe is set on having a developer build a luxury senior living center near where the lagoon is which would apparently necessitate ripping out the existing trees to convert the bird sanctuary into a public park. Also some people have complained about smells coming from the lagoon which actually appear to be due to pollutants being channelled into that area according to several eye-witness reports from environmental activists trying to save it from destruction. At the current rate, they are planning to cut down all 650 trees by Jan. 1, 2015. This would pose a severe threat to the birds who nest there as they would lose their home. At this point, there is the option of protesting the cutting down of trees (and possibly risking arrest in the process) or at least documenting what theyre doing (which itself is illegal since the bird sanctuary was supposed to be protected according to a federal mandate) in the hopes of showing to everyone later on how wrong it is. I suppose if there is an attorney out there who would be willing to take on this case pro-bono and challenge the county on their decision, that would potentially provide another avenue to address this egregious injustice.
