To fully understand the present, it is important to understand the past. As part of the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation and the U.S. Embassy’s partnership with the World Monuments Fund, Jeff Allen of the World Monuments Fund and Francoise Tainturier of the Inya Institute discussed evolutional changes at Shwe-nandaw Kyaung in Mandalay at the Jefferson Center on December 10. He describes how the monastery changed over the years, from its construction in the 1850s to today, and its multiple roles as a monastery, historical monument, and tourist destination. This careful attention to the history of the site will allow conservation efforts to proceed in the most accurate and appropriate ways possible, and with respect to the very important role that this building has played in Mandalay and throughout the country. What places are important to you and your community?
