To get closer to Allah and seek His love then make sure you observe those fard acts of worship (Salat @ their appointed time, Fasting, Hijab for men and women etc) Allah made them obligatory because He love them and that is why there are penalties (punishment) if we fail in doing them. And Allah also made it known in Hadith Qudsi 25, that when His servant keeps coming to Him with voluntary acts (Sunnah prayers, charity, doing good work in the community and to neighbors, husband assisting wife, keeping good relationship with families and friends, Sunnah fasting, saying truthful things @ all time, and all other Sunnah acts etc), to such people He will become their eyes, mouths, ears, hands, and legs. And when Allah become all these, it means Our eyes will rejects obscene pictures/movies, our ears will only wanna hear things that are beloved to Allah (not listening to Gossips, pop musics), hands will Only wanna touch that which is acceptable by Allah, and legs will Only wanna go to places that are beloved to Allah. Allah promised that He will answer the Dua of such people. On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Allah (mighty and sublime be He) said: Whosoever shows enmity to someone devoted to Me, I shall be at war with him. My servant draws not near to Me with anything more loved by Me than the religious duties I have enjoined upon him, and My servant continues to draw near to Me with supererogatory works so that I shall love him. When I love him I am his hearing with which he hears, his seeing with which he sees, his hand with which he strikes and his foot with which he walks. Were he to ask [something] of Me, I would surely give it to him, and were he to ask Me for refuge, I would surely grant him it. I do not hesitate about anything as much as I hesitate about [seizing] the soul of My faithful servant: he hates death and I hate hurting him.” It was related by al-Bukhari
