Most of the time you are paying for the marketing and the real estate of the wine region rather than quality. Often great, affordable alternatives can be found just a stones throw away. Instead of Napa Valley Cabernet, try one from Washington State. Instead of a Chianti Classico, try a Morellino. Instead of a Red Burgundy, try a German or Oregon Pinot Noir. Instead of a Chablis, try a Ribolla Gialla from Italy or Slovenia. Instead of Champagne, try a vintage Cava from Spain. Instead of Sancerre, try a White Bordeaux. Any other suggestions?
