To give you a bit of context about what happened today at Dublin City Council, Sinn Féin Councillors reached agreement with Independent, Labour & Green Councillors in relation to the running of the City Council for the next five years. The agreement sets key priorities, including addressing the housing crisis and unemployment. The agreement will see a Sinn Féin Mayor of Dublin City in 2015/2016 and 2017/2018. Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael had the opportunity to be part of this agreement but they chose to pull out. Fianna Fáil did not want to a Sinn Féin Mayor in 2015/2016 while Fine Gael wanted us to make commitments in relation to future Council budgets that would have involved us not fulfilling the mandate given to us in the recent local elections. As the largest party on Dublin City Council we will continue to oppose Local Property Tax and Water Charges. Our aim for the upcoming five year council term is to represent the interests of all of the citizens in the Dublin City Council area and deliver change on key issues such as local government reform, local economic development, housing, the environment, public services and improving the quality of life for communities.
