To honor Jacques Cartier, Canada and France released this joint stamp issue to commemorate the 450th anniversary of his voyage. On April 20, 1534 Cartier embarked upon a discovery voyage to the New World with two ships and sixty-one men. Sailing from St. Malo, France, Cartier and his crew were blessed with calm seas and favorable winds. After a mere twenty days at sea, the sailing party came upon the shores of Newfoundland. Canada Scott #1011 (20 Apr 1984) By discovering the Gulf of the St. Lawrence, Jacques Cartier helped open Canada to French settlement. France Scott #1923 (20 Apr 1984) On subsequent expeditions Cartier discovered the St. Lawrence River and developed a strong alliance with the Indians...which assisted in the French colonization of Canada.
