To improve girls enrolment in primary schools: Providing toilets - TopicsExpress

To improve girls enrolment in primary schools: Providing toilets for girls is the most important factor that is responsible for poor enrolment. For example, in Karnataka, about 50% of schools do not have separate toilets for girls. Secondly, providing mid-day meals is certainly encourages students to enrol, since they get nourishment. However, the govt. must ensure that the teaching staff are not made to cook and serve food at lunch time. Instead, local women Self-Help-Groups must be retained on contract basis to cook and serve hot food in schools. The salary meant for a regular cook and helper could be given to women SHGs Lastly, Haemoglobin blood testing must be made compulsory in all primary schools. Anaemic condition of young girls is not detected in time, which affects their health and studies since they are unable to remember what is taught to them. Soon their performance in school drops and they withdraw from studies. - Venkatrao Y Ghorpade
