To kickoff the 2015 season, New Dawns Films for Change presents Alive Inside - Thursday, January 22nd, 7-9PM in the lounge at the New Dawn Centre for Social Innovation (37 Nepean St., Sydney). Winner of the 2014 Sundance Film Festival Audience Award, Alive Inside is a joyous cinematic exploration of music’s capacity to reawaken our souls and uncover the deepest parts of our humanity. This stirring documentary follows social worker Dan Cohen, founder of the non-profit organization Music & Memory, as he fights against a broken healthcare system to demonstrate music’s ability to combat memory loss and restore a deep sense of self to those suffering from it. Check out the trailer here: aliveinside.us/#land Join the Facebook event here: https://facebook/events/313894565467333/ The event is pay what you can but we suggest a $10 donation or $5 for unemployed, underemployed, non-waged, and students. This will help offset some of our costs. The film will be hosted by Alison Uhma – an invaluable member of the Films for Change organizing committee, mother of two, Sociology student at Cape Breton University, community activist and an aspiring pen and ink cartoonist. Alison was born in Neil’s Harbour, and spent her smallest years on the beaches, and in the snow banks of Ingonish before moving off to many parts of North America. Settling in her late teens in Calgary, Alberta she moved home to Cape Breton in 2010 as her mother Moira Ross moved into the late stages of early on-set Alzheimer’s. In November of 2013, at the age of 59, Moira died in the arms of her children from complications related to the disease. Having had this experience, Alison will facilitate a community conversation connecting the themes of the film to our local context and experience. Ardelle Reynolds will be organizing childrens activities that are both fun and educational. All parents/caregivers are encouraged to bring along their children (all ages), and to leave their worries behind while the kiddies participate in programming designed specifically for them! There will be complimentary fair trade tea and coffee as well as popcorn (including a vegan option). For more information please contact Jill at 902-577-2099 or mcpherson.jill@gmail
