To malign the past is one of the constants of history. Looking down upon the bygone civilizations and taking pride in the contemporary is as much a cult as a pompous necessity. In the same vein, the myth of the so-called Dark Ages has been constructed, systematized and sustained. We are told that perhaps the Dark Ages were utterly monstrous and unlivable.
