To many a layperson this kind of result implies that science is somehow inconsistent or broken: original research is refuted and a popular idea introduced into the culture is now considered incorrect. But scientists will tell you that this is exactly how the process is supposed to work. Construct a hypothesis and then test it against the available evidence. The more results you get the more your can refine - or dismiss - the hypothesis. Gluten sensitivity has now has now been shown not to exist - by the same people who proposed it in the first place. Sadly, much like the discredited MMR vaccine/autism link, this is likely to be met with howls of protest.
