To match my administrative work today, I decided to buy a cup of coffee in a coffee shop. The coffee maker noticed that I was wearing an ID and asked, Are you a professor? I answered, Faculty member (po)... teacher. Then he went on asking, What are you teaching? Before answering his second question, I very well knew what is about to happen... So I answered, Occupational therapy... O.T. And the coffee maker gave me a perplexed look, and asked again, I mean, what course are you teaching? I answered back in a very polite manner, Occupational therapy, its a health science course... its actually a profession. The coffee maker was like, Aaaaaah... trying to get what it really means, but I just know he still didnt get it. So I asked him immediately before he could throw another question, OT is different from PT, very very different. And his Aaaaaah... went louder re-assuring me that he was getting it a little bit better. So I told him the difference of OT and PT, not to mention, honored the significant role of physical therapists in rehabilitation, and left him with an example of what can OTs do just in case coffee makers in Starbucks suddenly incurred an injury and what an OT can do for them. This conversation lasted between 2 to 3 minutes. It was another challenge, but I am getting used to it -- explaining occupational therapy to different types of people -- since I have been doing the two-minute-what-is-OT-convo since I was in third year college. So the next time someone asks you about what you do, or what in the world are you studying about...always remember these three tips: 1. Give 1-2 minutes of your time to explain occupational therapy to the inquirer. 2. Define OT based on the occupations of the inquirer (for easier contextualization). 3. Compare the difference between OT and PT (or any other profession) by honoring other professions duties. #WhatIsOT #OccupationalTherapy #OTPromotion #DoItToday #3Tips #Coffee
