To me I cant imagine anything sillier than claiming American Sniper is a pro war film. There isnt one scene of glorification in this movie. The end of the film glorifies Chris Kyles service as a soldier and the very public funeral that he received. Beyond that there is no flag waving but there is plenty of carnage on both sides to make this as anti-war as youre going to get. I guarantee that the way it is directed and edited, you wont smile once but youll feel it in your gut they way youve felt the most powerful of war films in the past like Platoon and The Dee Hunter. Eastwood is past his Dirty Harry days and beginning with Unforgiven in 1992, the first truly great film that he directed, he debunked the John Wayne glorification of the old west which separated the black hats from the white hats. Eastwood showed the fear of dying his lead character had based on crimes committed in his earlier life and the hypocrisy of Gene Hackmans law man sheriff came about as near to close fisted violence as youre going to find. American Sniper and films like The Hurt Locker are merely trying to do what American films did after Vietnam and that is remember the conflicts for what they were and to avoid them in the future. Sadly it wasnt a lesson learned after Vietnam with conflicts in this century that lasted even longer. Who would have thought?
