To me personally this 20% import tax on mobile handsets is an illegality since it amounts to double taxation! Years back the import tax was scraped and replaced by the cst to simply curb the menace of smuggling handsets into the country and make sure that revenue indeed on every handset is paid with the cst implementation. Now you are introducing the import tax again, but without scraping the cst, a clear act of double taxation now. And much more, to me it seems to be a desperate step to protect and support RLG since they are not affected by that tax as well as protecting the interest of some "big wigs" and "cronies" in the background. But am sure, this step will not really protect RLG nor "help" the "big wigs" and "cronies" in any way, since RLG products are of INFERIOR QUALITY and SUBSTANDARD, and rather people will be ready to pay more for other handsets due to their quality advantage over RLG. And the other aspect will be that the smuggling of handset will come back in great style cos government in my opinion has not taken any steps so far to avoid it, nor will be able in future to curb it in anyway! ghanaweb/GhanaHomePage/NewsArchive/artikel.php?ID=281828
