To me, this conference turned out to be exactly what I wanted it to be...It was a glorious, long day in which 12 strong progressive Texas activist experts presented to 130 attendees from all over the state at the inaugural Texas MoveOn Conference-2014, held at UAW Local 276s union hall in Grand Prairie, TX. Working throughout the day, even through lunchtime, attendees remained riveted to the ongoing programs and participated in the Q&A segments following each issues presentation. Issues and topics ranged widely--from fracking and tar sands, to clean renewable energy, to water resources, to comprehensive immigration reform, to economic justice, to civil rights, to money out of politics, to fair trade vs. free trade, the Trans-Pacific Partnership --TPP, the global corporate coup, or ALEC on Steroids--to MoveOn tools, especially their petition site: petitions.moveon.org/. An interactive wrap-up strategy session, in which a consensus was reached by the attendees, decided on the new Texas Progressive Allies Coalition (TPAC) participating in a three-day series of anti-A.L.E.C. protests, see FB event link: https://facebook/events/756638977693840/ There was nearly unanimous praise for the conference, slated to be an annual event, by the participating Texas progressive activists from such organizations as Public Citizen, CodePINK, EARTHWORKS, TX Fair Trade Coalition, Sierra Club, No.TX Dream Team, five MoveOn Councils, FOUR organizations interested in getting $$$ out of politics (Wolf-PAC, Texans United to Amend, Move to Amend, and Clean Elections Texas). Other groups represented by attendees included: Battleground TX, TX Alliance of Retired Americans, Veterans for Peace, Barnett Shale Blog, Common Grounds for Texans, and other politically progressive groups too numerous to mention. Videos made at the event have begun to be posted, and others by Dennis Myles (dmyproductions) will continue to be, as post-production work is completed.
