To me this underrated film is the best American movie about the Vietnam War, because instead of limiting itself to dealing with the psychological trauma faced by American soldiers (which is still the focus of the movie, granted), it fully owns up to what we actually did to those people. 3 million Vietnamese, Cambodians and Laotians slaughtered. More bombs dropped on that tiny country than were dropped by all sides in World War 2. I dont think most of the American people have really faced up to the horror we unleashed there. Some conservatives I know seem to only have anger at Jane Fonda for visiting the North Vietnamese leadership, while having no anger at all about the napalm, B52 bombings, rape and pillage we inflicted on those people in support of a failed French colonial effort.
