To my friends sharing headline stories about the Facebook - TopicsExpress

To my friends sharing headline stories about the Facebook Messenger app permissions… Most articles circulating around right now are FUD pieces, spreading fear, uncertainty and doubt. Its literally a made-up story. Most of the permissions they ask for are also asked by many other popular messaging and social media applications across all platforms; Android, iOS and Windows Phone. The descriptions sound innocuous, but theyre necessary for the app to work at a basic level. For example, it needs microphone access to do the free VoIP calling worldwide. It needs photos and video access to share them with friends. It uses for contact info to optionally sync data on your phone with data your friends post on FB to stay up to date. It accesses your phone dialer and SMS in order to optionally integrate and unify messages on your phone into the app. MANY messaging apps already do this, including Googles own Hangouts. /None/ of these permissions are new. Most have been in the app for years. Why its suddenly a big deal is a mystery to me. In summary, please stop spreading around these kinds of articles. I have issues with Facebook as a company, but I have bigger issues with sensationalist headlines and false stories. If you want the app to work with all its features, it needs those permissions. If youre worried about Facebook collecting information about you, close your account. Deleting an app on your phone doesnt delete the wealth of information the company already has about you; information that you voluntarily gave it.
