To my friends who live and vote in Irvine, or who have the ear of people who do: Please consider Mary Ann Gaido for mayor. Ive known her for decades, and shes what we in Costa Mesa call good people. Shes been involved in Irvine city government practically since there WAS an Irvine, initially getting involved in shaping the citys master plan in 1973, because the city asked for volunteers and she had a sense of civic duty. Shes served as mayor and in various other civic positions, including currently as a planning commissioner, and knows how to make the city work for its people, balancing business and public interests to the betterment of both, one reason why Irvine operates at a surplus, with a sizable contingency fund. The current Irvine council majority, elected as moderates, have proven to be ideologues, trying to dismantle effective, cost-efficient city projects and partnerships simply because they do not believe in government, no matter how well it serves the wishes, interests and moral character of its people. It is a source of bafflement to those of us who know Mary Ann to see her dismissed as part of the Larry Agran cabal. She was involved in Irvine before he came along and has always been very much her own person, answerable to her constituency and no one else. Whatever Agrans failings, hes helped lead Irvine to be one of the most prosperous, safe and forward-looking cities in the US. Are we supposed to fault Mary Ann for voting with Agran when he was right? Again, please, look at her record, hear what she has to say, and vote like the soul of the city is at stake come Tuesday. maryanngaido/
