To my mind it is perfectly reasonable when Modi says that he is saddened by the 2002 post Godhra riots ... but does not feel guilty . It is the unambiguous articulation of a man who felt that he acted to the best of his ability and yet could not completely prevent that horrible event. Canards spread by the UPA aside, there is more than enough documentation and material available to show that he acted with greater alacrity and even handedness than has been the case with the scores of other riots that have occurred under a secular watch ..why then the insistence on the word sorry by Modis detractors? I dont think they are asking for that to assuage the feelings of the minority ... They are raising the bogey of an apology simply because the use of that word would imply tacit complicity... Modi is too seasoned an individual to fall into this trap. Those who hate him have been unwilling to accept even a judicial verdict, let alone accepting an apology ... The word sorry would achieve little other than providing more grist for the anti- Modi mill!
