To my students: Domestication of the Ego Martial arts is a journey. Where you strive to better your life and your character. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit. ~ Aristotle The most important habit in your life is your family. You must learn to get along with your family, your martial art family and people in general. Understand if you don’t have a family, you still have a martial art family and still have to get along with people. When you enter the school the first lesson you learn is to leave your ego outside. The second lesson you learn how to control the ego and that the ego is both good and evil. The third lesson you learn is that you cannot control how other people behave and react to situations. The fourth lesson you learn is that you can only control yourself. The fifth lesson is learning to test the perception of yourself. The purpose is to uncover the reality of your real-self. The reality and your perception can be different. Learn to ask a senior or people around you what they think of you. Compare. This is how you test your personality. The sixth lesson is testing your vanity with real sparring. Revealing your improvement or your lack of improvement. This is a safety catch to ensure you don’t live in a fantasy world. The seventh lesson is to become a Gentlemen or a Lady. With respect for life, compassion and courtesy for others. In our school you will learn to live in peace with others, be humble, avoid reacting arrogantly or egotistically to other people’s challenges and insults, and strive to deescalate conflict to avoid violence. Above all things you must learn to be in peace with yourself. Learn to recognize the ugly person who has hate and cannot be in peace with others. Keep yourself from associating and becoming this person Train to know when to speak, when to be silent and when your words are useless. Your ego is your friend or your enemy. It’s the identification you have of your-self and who you are, what you do and how others perceive you. Take time to learn and gage your ego. Let’s learn to listen and follow good suggestions. Keep your ego in check. Beware of a possible misperceptions of inflated or deflated ability that can be destructive. This can lead you to fight or you picking a fight like a bully. Worse you could agitate an unnecessary confrontation and be killed by a guy with low self-esteem that’s angry. Ego is a path that needs guidance and constant evaluation. Without insight and objectivity this is a path bound for failure and stunted growth. The untrained, untested false ego creates fear or vanity. Big ego wants to be separate from the rest, better than the rest and put itself to be untouchable. This dysfunctional conditions of the ego can revolve around our over reactions to situations and involve excessive preoccupation with yourself. Be careful not to have excessive reactions to situations that create people hating you and even attacking you or even killing you. It causes severe suffering for everyone involved and greatly limit ones ability to enjoy the beauty of life. When a person is absorbed in himself, he has no time to build his character. When he forgets himself and corrects his ego. He collects all that is good and beautiful. This is the key to life. Let’s learn to talk about people. Learn to understand Human Nature. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. You will realize that people are not basically good. That everyone is motivated by a certain level of selfishness or ego. This selfishness can cause people to do shocking things. Different people develop different levels of control over their selfish nature. Some people have a high level of control and others don’t. It is important to remember that anyone can become violent or dangerous given the right circumstances. Keep in mind, There might be a badly adjusted person that you directly or indirectly are dealing with. These people could be a potential threat to your safety. So be kind, courteous and aware. We should cultivate awareness of this fact. Without living in fear of people or becoming paranoid. Recap, we talked about our ego, other people’s ego. Now, let talk about your Vanity. It is a necessary thing. All great athletes need this to be the best and be on top. I love to be competitive! Back to the ego. There are people who have, early in life, suffered from their destructive egos and yet. Eventually they discovered how to use that same powerful ego. It brought love, harmony and beauty into their world. Be safe and remember family comes first! Gm Arthur Gonzalez of Tenio’s DeCuerdas Escrima and DeCuerdas-Diestro Fighting Systems
