To say that we are overwhelmed this evening would be an understatement. Many members of our team are functioning on very little sleep as they work to coordinate holiday giving while handling the vast amount of referrals that are coming in. Those who have slept are out driving, while others struggle to take case information as soon as possible so that drivers may be dispatched. The average time elapsed between referral and distribution is around 47 minutes this evening. That is longer than usual for us but quite impressive considering the evening we are having. Each day for the next ten days will be busier than the next. Over the next several days several of our volunteers will wonder as they have before if sleep will ever come. Whenever things get discouraging I think of a quote by Fred Rogers When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping. It is 11pm and we have volunteers working to sort and organize donations, pull aid for children in crisis, coordinate with donors, input receipts into our bookkeeping system, fill out tax receipts and update case information. At this moment we have volunteers in Glenville, NY, Schenectady, NY, Buffalo, NY, Niskauna, NY, Staten Island, NY, Los Angeles, CA and even Virginia that are working to the best of their ability to keep up with the situations before us. To all of our volunteers, especially those who are in college and took time away from their finals to help, you are all amazing! We are so proud to know each one of you. You really are making a difference in the world, one child at a time.
