To show off the new community tornado shelter and new high school kitchen, Cabool R-4 School District will host an open house and free dinner on Tuesday, August 12, from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. The event is open to everyone in the community. Persons are encouraged to come to the shelter located at the north end of the high school “B” building along Second Street and take a tour, learn the various entrances, and familiarize themselves with the building that is now ready to provide a safe place to go should a tornado threaten the area. “We want people there to see what doors to use to go in and out,” Dr. Wes Davis, school superintendent said. In addition, the school will be serving free meals to all who attend. Persons will go through the cafeteria line, just as high school students will do when school starts August 14. “All of the food staff will be working,” Davis said. “We want to try to utilize all our equipment and do a little training ourselves.” The menu for the meal has not been set as the district is checking with its food vendors to see what they may contribute. August 12 is also open house night at Cabool’s three schools. The elementary school will be open from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m., the middle school from 6:00 to 7:00, and the high school from 7:00 to 8:00. During those times students and parents can meet with teachers and bring in school supplies in preparation for the first day of school. Davis said the tornado shelter/high school kitchen open house and dinner, as well as the building open houses, are open to all. “We’re inviting everyone, not just parents with kids,” he said. The storm shelter is a $1,123,000 project that received $816,828 in funding from a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grant. It was built to withstand winds of 250 miles per hour. Adjoining the shelter, the school district constructed, at its expense, a new kitchen that enables the shelter to be used as a cafeteria space when not in use as a shelter. The combined cost of both projects is $1.89 million. Both were built by Gentry Construction Company and completed well in advance of the project’s spring 2015 deadline.
