To speak of a standard that should guide and animate the church is to say that the only hope for it to fulfill its true function is in a return to Christian orthodoxy, one that carries with it a determination to fulfill its heritage of doctrine, faith, and practice. This would not be satisfied with dogmatic utterances but would insist on the full application of the prophetic tradition, cutting radically through the idolatrous web of the larger society.… Meanwhile, we are left with a church that to a large extent has chosen to befriend the powers that dominate the world instead of judging them. We should be reminded that the crucifixion of Christ was a joint production, instigated by religious authorities and then carried out by the state. When the state joins forces with historicism and humanism in forging the great brutalities of the future, we should not be surprised to find the representatives of the establishment churches, fuglemen for the idolatries, earnestly assuring us that Gods will is being done.
