To take it back home to Guam, here are two key points for consideration from the article: 1) Japan Self-Defense Forces currently have dozens of naval surface ships, 16 submarines and three helicopter carriers, with more vessels under construction. Japan is also buying 42 advanced F-35 stealth fighter jets. 2) U.S. forces number 28,000 in South Korea, 38,000 in Japan and for Guam it will probably aggregate to over 10,000 total once the build-up is complete. What is certain: with 66,000 U.S. troops in Japan and South Korea, over 10,000 to be in Guam, and four billion dollar plus projects taking place in Asia (Iwakuni, Camp Humphreys, Guam, Okinawa) we will see levels of militarism that has not been present since WWII. 2) Japan is the anchor relationship of the U.S. in Asia and this is only become stronger. 3) Guam will continue to be a major gas station, ammo storage facility, military airport and key submarine base for U.S. forces. 4) GOJ will be spending literally billions on purchasing 42 F-35s. What is uncertain: how China will react to increased militarism seen in Japan with strong U.S. backing. 2) how the U.S. will react, if at all, to provocations initiated unto Japan or South Korea or the PI from China or North Korea in the South and East China Sea and the Sea of Japan. 3) the possibility of Guam being attacked should the PLA(N) decide to challenge American military primacy in the Western Pacific in 20 years.
