To the Loyal Evergreen By Elias Bourgess Maybe one day people will say I was another Ryan Giggs. - George Best When I was asked to write about Ryan Giggs, a lot of ideas came to my mind on how I would pay tribute to one of the main reasons I started watching Manchester United especially on that night when he scored in extra time against Arsenal in that famous FA Cup semi final in 1999. When it comes to United greats, Ryan Giggs is one of the first names that come to our mind. Of course, everybody knows Ryan Giggs whether you are a Man Utd Fan or just a Football fan. A brief history lesson: Ryan Giggs joined Manchester United as an apprentice in 1987 after captaining Salford Boys to winning the Granada Schools Cup competition where he was named as man of the match and was given the trophy by then-Liverpool chief scout Ron Yeats. And later on scored a hat trick while playing for Salford boys against Uniteds Under 15 side with Sir Alex Ferguson watching from his office window. I remember the first time I saw him. He was 13 and he floated across the ground like a cocker spaniel chasing a piece of silver paper in the wind - Sir Alex Ferguson He was given his first team debut in March 1991 against Everton when he came off as a substitute for Dennis Irwin, 2 months later he was given his full debut where he scored the only goal in a 1-0 win against Manchester City. His talent is God-given. He will have wonderful skill even when he’s got his bus pass, because that sort of ability never deserts you. - 1968 European Cup winner Brian Kidd He went on to have an amazing career full of honours that took 24 years (From 1990 to 2014) playing for one and only one club, Manchester United. He also has a lot of records in the Premier League that will stay unbroken for a really long time. As a player, he won 34 club honours with Manchester United including 13 Premier League Medals and 2 Champions League Gold Medals, He is one of only four players to have won 2 Champions League medals while being in a Manchester United Shirt alongside Paul Scholes, Gary Neville and Wes Brown. (Yes Wes Brown, as shocking as it sounds) “Ryan makes you believe there is a football God. - Former Manchester United Manager Ron Atkinson When it comes to Individual honours, Ryan Giggs has had 30 Individual honours including being inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2005 and winning the Golden Foot in 2011. There have been so many outstanding players Ive had as team-mates, but if I had to choose Id choose Giggsy, he can do anything. - Paul Scholes He also had backroom roles in Manchester United starting the 2013-2014 when David Moyes installed him as Player/Coach throughout last season until Moyes was sacked and Giggs was installed as Cartaker player/manager towards the end of last year and then installed as Assistant Manager to Current Manager Louis Van Gaal. Hes an outstanding player and its a privilege to be working with him on my staff. Ive seen something different since Ive come here - just how good he is, close up - and its incredible - former Manchester United manager David Moyes I have seen a lot of trainees and I have thought that Ryan Giggs is a trainee but he isnt a trainee, he is an exception. I have seen a lot of trainees and I am very happy with him because he has showed already that he can communicate with the group in front of him. And I have seen that he can explain what - how do you say in English? - what is the issue of the training session. And he can say it in a different way, which is a miracle because not so many ex-players can do that. - Louis Van Gaal Some quotes from Legends/ footballers and Managers on Ryan Giggs Only two players made me cry when watching football, one was Diego Maradona and the other Ryan Giggs - Italian World Cup winner Alessandro Del Piero Eric Cantona is a great player, but hes not as good as Ryan Giggs - Dutch legend and three-time world player of the year Johan Cruyff “The first time I saw Giggsy, he was playing for Salford Boys against United’s apprentices. He was thin and wiry but he just glided past four of our apprentices as if they weren’t even there, then he put the ball in the back of the net. I just thought ‘This kid’s an absolute natural. - Bryan Robson “When Ryan runs at players he gives them twisted blood. They dont want to be a defender anymore. - Sir Alex Ferguson “He has been an unbelievable player. The only problem I saw in him is that he played for the wrong team, from my point of view. He should have played for us (Chelsea). - Gianfranco Zola If Giggs was French, Pires or me would have been on the bench. - Zinedine Zidane
