To those of my patriotic, FB friends who, due to personal belief, - TopicsExpress

To those of my patriotic, FB friends who, due to personal belief, or philosophy question, or reject the importance of the "religious" institutions of this nation, let me ask these questions: What is the distinction between a Democracy and a Republic; and why is America currently ALWAYS referred to in educational and governmental circles as the former? Further, how to YOU understand the following declaration of John Adams? From where do moral and virtuous standards arise? What defines "good" and "evil?" Finally, how could Jefferson outline ANYTHING as a "self evident" truth, without such being preponderantly understood? "Public virtue cannot exist in a nation without private, and public virtue is the only foundation of republics. There must be a positive passion for the public good, the public interest, honour, power and glory, established in the minds of the people, or there can be no republican government, nor any real liberty: and this public passion must be superiour to all private passions." --John Adams, letter to Mercy Warren, 1776 If "virtue" is solely the construct of human imagination and "humanity" is the ultimate and final arbiter of what is "good" and "just," Democracy wins the definitive description and we are condemned to revert to tooth and claw, by which the argument was asserted that "might makes right;" that there is some justification for claimed aristocracy; and Obama has a legitimate claim to the imposition of whatever regulation he conceives of, as he is currently "the man!" God forbid!!!
