To those who bash welfare and any kind of taxpayer-funded, government-administrated assistance for struggling folks who are trying to get their feet under them and get a career started, I would offer the following scenario: My friend in Nova Scotia was able to live on the dole as they say in Canada, for three years after she finished college. As a result of that support, she was able to build on her education as a costume designer, and has gone on to a successful career in television, stage and film. Three months after I finished school, the student loan people were screaming for a regular schedule of re-payment. I ended up taking one minimum wage job after another, and never achieving anything in my chosen career. Now which of us -- my Canadian friend or me -- do you think has been able to give back more in terms of talent, income, and taxes to their society, and to their government?? The system in the United States of America is rigged against success, and then blames the ones who dont succeed.
