To those who had a surfeit of Modi on my wall last month, sorry, - TopicsExpress

To those who had a surfeit of Modi on my wall last month, sorry, for here I go again :-) Enjoyed watching this 1st speech of his in English. In the beginning I grinned at the way he pronounced technology, let, natural, whether, owe...OMG this is perfect material for a spoof on Gujaratis, I thought. But then...as always...a master orator like Modi can never disappoint! For a while you might be distracted by the style but the substance will always shine through. And so the nuggets kept coming both in English and Hindi. There was a time when Indian rockets were transported on bicycles! Indias Mars Mission costs less than the Hollywood movie Gravity :-) Indias space programme is going to help map the countrys water resources, to update land records (also improve accuracy, bring transparency), to improve connections in myriad ways, to bring wasteland into productive use. Hey I didnt know that India offered tele-medicine services to Afghanistan and some African countries. Or that there were 4 generations of Indian scientists working on space research at this moment. Some interesting quotes: Satellite technology has made distance irrelevant. Space imaging plays a critical role in realising the vision of a digital India. Loved the bit where he said We need to do more. Yeh dil maange more! I would like to challenge the scientists here to come up with a SAARC satellite that we can dedicate to our neighbours as a gift from India - a satellite that provides a full range of services and applications to our neighbours, which helps in reaching out to all the poor and underprivileged of the region, helping in education, fighting poverty, superstitions and enabling the youth to advance. I would also like the footprint of the satellite to cover navigation all over the region so that our neighbours can benefit. Let us become a part of the success of our neighbours. Totally agree that we need a space museum in India. Note to myself: Find out more about plans for GIS-enabled watershed development and disaster management mentioned by Modi. Visit the Bhuvan Space Portal he talked about which he said would give a great deal of information about Indias space programme.
