To tone or not to tone? Keeley tells us why it is such a vital step in our skincare regime... I think by now we all know how important it is to cleanse and moisturise but toning is a step that I find a lot of people miss out on, I think this is due to some of the harsh astringents that used to be classed as toners that often left people skins sore and irritated. The first and most important job of a toner is to restore the skins natural pH balance. The skin has a pH balance of 5.5, while water can have a pH balance as high as 9.5 depending on where you live and on how hard the water is. After washing your skin, your skins pH balance is completely distorted and your skin starts working overtime to restore pH levels; a process which may take up to 12 hours to get back to the correct pH.On the other hand, if you use a toner, pH levels are restored in an instant. Your skin is now prepared for your moisturiser and you have helped maintain your skins natural moisture and lipid barrier to help prevent against moisture loss that can lead to dehydration and skin sensitivity. In the Todays Special Value July 13th we have finally included a FULL SIZE toner so you have a complete Cleanse, Tone and Moisturising system. I have chosen the Apricot toner with its natural soothing and sweet betty flower properties as it is suitable for all skin types and great to use as a rehydration spray, can be applied over make up to give a fresh look and also refreshing to the eyes if sprayed onto dry cotton wool and used as an eye compress!
