To understand physical process on earth requires a revision of the theory that were all Gods creatures—all that Victorian sentiment. It should certainly be extended to encompass disease, virus and bacteria. Why not? A virus is only doing its job. Its trying to live its life. The fact that its destroying you by doing so is not its fault. Its about trying to understand interrelationships among organisms, even those we perceive as disease. To understand it from the diseases point of view, its just a matter of life. It has nothing to do with disease. I think most diseases would be very shocked to be considered diseases at all. Its a very negative connotation. For them, its very positive when they take over your body and destroy you. Its a triumph. Its all part of trying to reverse the normal understanding of what goes on physically, psychologically and biologically to us. The characters in SHIVERS experience horror because they are still standard,straightforward members of the middle-class high-rise generation. I identify with them after theyre infected. I identify with the parasites,basically. Of course theyre going to react with horror on a conscious level. Theyre bound to resist. Theyre going to be dragged kicking and screaming into this new experience. But, underneath, there is something else, and thats what we see at the end of the film. They look beautiful at the end. They dont look diseased or awful. David Cronenberg
