To update on the book I am reading. From the 1970s to present day, the impact of the R&D for the cold war resulted in the fragmentation of business. The impacts of the R&D led to easier telecommunications, and lower transportation costs. A further impact was the increase of competition (Honda, VW, BMW, Toyota, Datsun) who not only introduced their products but decided to build factories in this country. Before the 1980s, these companies had employed about 20% of auto workers in this country. Ramifications, lower union participation rate, downward pressure on wages, and an increasing fragmentation of business. In the corporate world, a shift began away for corporate USA citizenship back to the basics of business, profit with financial return to shareholders.
