Today’s #pillowsonavot comes from #PirkeiAvot 6:10 Part Five In each of the next Divrie Torah one portion of the text will be examined. In previous posts the first four portions were explained. G-d acquired five acquisitions in his world. The fifth acquisition is the Holy Temple, as it is written (Exodus 15:17), "The base for Your dwelling that you, G-d, have achieved; the Sanctuary, O L-rd, that Your hands have established"; and it says (Psalms 78:54), "And He brought them to His holy domain, this mount His right hand has acquired." The phrase that God has acquired five acquisitions in his world is difficult to understand. The Sforno explained that the text is speaking metaphorically and means to convey that there are five things that God created the world to accomplish and they are represented by the five things listed in this text. The Sforno explained that the Temple was the one place to go to understand God. The Temple was not only the place of offerings, the Sanhedrin, the high court, sat there as well. The high court did more than just preside over disputes; they clarified points of the Torah in a public fashion. The Temple Mount was a place that people went to understand God, both through action in offerings, and through the intellect, in Torah study. The Temple allowed man to perceive God not only through his intellect, but through experience as well.
