Today - The Carbet Falls of Guadeloupe are the highest waterfalls in the eastern Caribbean. Although Christopher Columbus named the island of Guadeloupe in 1493, he failed to stop to explore its natural wonders. Guadeloupe is made up of two islands with very different landscapes. The landscape of the eastern island, Grand Terre, features rolling hills, mangrove swamps, and sugar-can plantations, while the western island, Basse Terre, has a more rugged and mountainous terrain which is dominated by the majestic La Soufriere Volcano. The Carbet Falls are found in Basse Terres 30,000 hectare Parc Naturel, which also contains La Soufriere Volcano as well as areas of tropical forest. The water for the three waterfalls that make up the Carbet Falls gush down from the slopes of the volcano. The uppermost waterfall is the tallest of the the three with a height of 125 meters. The second is slightly less at 110 meters, bu is probably the most impressive. The lowermost waterfalls is much shorter than the others at about 20 meters in height, but is picturesque and easily accessible.
