Today, 04th March is the 38th death anniversary of Comrade Gerald Perreira. His is famous for his revolutionary freedom struggle activities against the Portuguese and well known for his work in Trade Union after the Liberation in Goa when he 1st organize strike of port and dock workers in Mormugao port by founding the 1st Trade Union on 20th January 1962 just after the Liberation of Goa...He is the father of Goa’s trade union movement and a great freedom fighter who participated in Goas freedom struggle along with his wife Dr. Luiza Perreira and both faught against the Portuguese regime. Comrade Gerald Perriera penned his book when he was in Poona for his Post graduate studies in history where he met our greatest Goan and India’s top most Scientist and Marxist Historian Damodar Dharmanad Kosambi and under his influence he wrote about the ‘Pre-Portuguese history of Goa’ in Portuguese prison and completed his Law degree by ferocious reading behinds the Portuguese jail bars.. His contribution to the Trade Union movement of working and Peasantry Communist Revolutionary movement was invaluable. He was a Communist politician from Goa who also worked with other Communists freedom fighters like Dr. T.B.Cunha and Berta Menezes. He was born on 20th September 1929 in Vasco in a middle class Family. During his student days he got involved with Freedom struggle of Indian nationalism and Marxism. His political activities got him jailed in 1958, and 1960. He revolted against his established order and despite being a highly qualified in Law as a lawyer and post Graduate in history decided to fight for the cause of Working class along with his wife Dr. Luiza Perreira. Both Comrade Perreiras never ever opted for Goa Government pension for freedom fighters nor opted for any benefits of freedom fighter schemes.. All our old Comrades in Trade union struggle hold him in high respect and recognizes the contribution of Comrade Gerald Perreira for the working class of Goa. He had been an unparalleled propagandist and agitator. He oranised people into agitations by exposing anti-people policies of exploiting classes through his speeches in Trade Union movement. Com Gerald Perreira played his role in the addressing the issues as the representative of working class and its movement. His Comrades still shares some of his memorable glimpses of the simple, friendly, cultured, humane and compassionate personality with revolutionary zeal and passion for the cause of the Working class. Goa’s Working class feels a terrible sense of loss with the early demise of Comrade Gerald Perreira at the age of 47 due to Cardiac arrest and with this the working class of Goa lost its sensitivity, political simplicity, democratic innocence, ability to spontaneously connect with people and that is what we miss today, tragically in Trade unionism and anti Bourgeoisie struggle and after the death of Comrade Gerald Perreira and his wife Dr. Luiza Perreira kept the revolutionary torch burning which was ignited at the crematorium at Vasco from the funeral pyre of Comrade Gerald Perreira were he was created on 4th March 1976.
