Today 11 January—in Hawaiian History [1892]: The Hawaiian Historical Society is founded in Honolulu. On this day 123 years ago, a group of prominent businessmen, church leaders, politicians, writers and publishers gathered to organize a society for the collection, preservation and presentation of the history of all things Hawaiian. The meeting was led by Joseph S. Emerson who declared “We now seek, and shall continue to seek, exact historic truth, and shall cordially welcome it from whatever source it may reach us. The field is extremely rich.” The first librarian, the Rev. R. R. Hoes U.S. Navy, said Nothing ever printed in this country, even an ephemeral handbill, is without ultimate historic interest, and there is destroyed every month, in this community, materials that would be of permanent interest and value on the shelves of our library.” At that first meeting of the society, the officers passed a resolution stating, “that in the view of the opportunity before us the time has come in our opinion for the formation of a local Antiquarian and Historical Society, affiliated with the proposed Polynesian Society of New Zealand, but acting as an independent organization in its methods and administration.” The collected body also passed the following resolution: “Resolved, that Her Majesty Liluiokalani (sic), Queen of the Hawaiian Kingdom, be elected the Patron of this Society, and that the President and Corresponding Secretary be appointed a Committee to wait upon Her Majesty, and request her acceptance.” [a few of the many treasures protected by the Hawaiian Historical Society]
