Today, 13 years ago we remember. No matter how old we were, we remember everything. I was in 9th grade sitting in class at JFK. As a young teenager I didnt quite grasp what was going on. It wasnt until a little later in chorus with Patty Scaramella until I realized how horrible this tragedy was and realized we as Americans will never be the same again. As we continued our school day, teachers were told not to turn on the news and not to talk about what was going on...thankfully all my teachers realized the seriousness of this and twisted the rules. We talked, asked questions and thought...whats next? I left school and went home still questioning what really was going on. I sat by myself outside and looked up at the beautiful blue sky and it was so eerie not seeing a single plane but I knew we were going to get through this; we as a Nation but most importantly us as New Yorkers. And we did...and still are! That following summer I was lucky enough to travel with a performing group that went to NYC and Washington DC and perform in some places that were affected. My most memorable moment was performing in the courtyard at the Pentagon while construction workers were still rebuilding part of the building. At one point in the show, during Proud to be an American, the construction workers even stopped working, put their hats to their hearts and stood watching us. Everyone who was there(people in congress, survivors, audience members, ect.) sat there silent, some mouthing the words, others hugging the person next to them...all of us either crying or with tears in our eyes. This was not because we felt defeated or beaten but because no matter who we were or where we came from, we were one and all going to get through this together, as a nation. We will move on but NEVER forget. Thanks for all the brave men, women and children for everything you did on this day 13 years ago and have continued to do. To those we have lost along the way, you truly are our heroes. Im proud to be an American but most of all Im proud to be a New Yorker
