Today, 16th March, the Jamaican-born JOHN RUSSWURM (1799-1851), alongside minister Samuel Cornish, brought out the first edition of FREEDOMS JOURNAL, the first newspaper for African Americans, in 1827. Born in Port Antonio, to a slave mother, he moved with his father to Canada, then America; where he became one of the first Black graduates, of an American college. First a teacher, then a pioneering journalist, in their own words, they published this newspaper, to plead our own cause. Later on, believing Black people would receive a better chance of equality and dignity in Africa, he moved to Liberia, in 1829. Continuing his trail blazing, he founded the Liberia Herald newspaper, as well as becoming a leading figure in the public school system - and a local governor.
