Today, 75 years ago, 1 September 1939, the British Prime Minister, Sir Neville Chamberlain, under an earlier commitment made to Poland, delivered an ultimatum to Adolf Hitler at his Chancellery in Berlin to the effect that unless Germany agreed to withdraw its forces from Poland within 48 hours, a state of war would exist between the two countries. And when that expired with no response from Herr Hitler, Great Britain found itself at war with Nazi Germany. Within a matter of hours France followed suit, and WWII had begun! Earlier that summer, my first school year had ended and there was the long summer holiday to look forward to. But that went by all too soon, and when the last days of that glorious summer began to wane, I could hardly wait for school to begin. Sadly, however, events took a different turn and my school never even opened its doors. At dawn on that very day, massed German Panzer divisions surged across the Polish border without any formal declaration of war.. As a result, I never went back to school and my education which had barely begun, was at an end. The happy times were over; it was to be my last summer of bliss with my loving parents and siblings around me. I always hark back to that wonderful summer with nostalgia and fond memories. How I wished with all my heart that time would stand still, but sadly the halcyon days were over, and with it went my secure and carefree childhood. A week later or so, we stood bewildered outside our home and watched with disbelief as the first grim-faced German soldiers with goggles on their helmets rode in on BMW motorcycles with machine guns mounted on side cars.
