Today Begins the first annual 2014 Severe weather awareness week outlook Today we focus on a very helpful organized program called SKYWARN and we will also say a big thanks after the end of each presentation who all help in the SKYWARN program : SKYWAR is a Special program used by the National Weather Service which includes a nationwide network of volunteer storm spotters trained by the National Weather Service (NWS) to report significant weather. Anyone with an interest in weather is welcome to participate. To become a trained storm spotter, you need to attend a storm training session, offered at various times and places across the Morristown County Warning Area. The National Weather Services mission is to protect lives and property with safety being the top priority. When weather conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms or tornadoes to develop, a severe thunderstorm or tornado watch is issued. A severe thunderstorm or tornado warning is issued when severe weather has been reported by a SKYWARNTM spotter or indicated by Doppler radar. SKYWARNTM volunteers become the NWSs and local Emergency Managements eyes and ears, helping them to provide the public with better weather watch and warning services. Its Important to Know that while participating in SKYWARN this is NOT the program to be taken lightly but rather be very safe and vigilant while participating in SKYWARN . Usually when Severe Thunderstorms Threaten SKYWARN volunteers are put on watch this is also true with your local coordinator for Skywarn Of East Tennessee. I would also like to recognize and say a BIG thank you to all those involved taking their time out to report SEVERE WEATHER never assume your report will not count . The NWS needs your report of severe weather whether it be taken by a PHONE call or via Web Site . Remember your safety is important and should not be put in harms way especially when it comes to family Safety -
