Today Bill 8 flew through Committee at the Legislature without any significant changes. I am most disappointed that our recommendation to ensure accountability by enabling the Advocate’s Office to obtain information in the course of its duties, specifically when it reviews complaints or conducts reviews under the Act; was not accepted. This amendment was not about investigations it was just a clause that said when we are advocating for children we are able to get the information we think we need. Sadly we are left with our limited access to information intact. On the other hand the Bill will pass and we will have the ability to investigate issues for children and youth relating to the work of the Childrens Aid Society. This is an important step and one we will undertake with integrity and fearlessness.
