Today, Governor Deals office released his Education Reform Commission. This commission will study the state’s education system, including its funding formula, and provide recommendations intended to improve the system, increase access to early learning programs, recruit and retain high-quality instructors and expand school options for Georgia’s families. gov.georgia.gov/press-releases/2015-01-21/deal-names-education-reform-commission-members As opposed to his Education Advisory Commission, which is made up of current Teachers and Administrators, this REFORM commission has the following makeup: State Legislators - 10 Business Leaders - 5 District Superintendents - 5 Charter School Representatives - 4 University/Higher Education - 3 Principal - 1 Instructional Support Specialists - 1 Active Teachers - NONE There are NO representatives from GAE or PAGE, the two largest teacher associations in Georgia. The only teacher group represented is Educators First, the small group who endorsed Deal in the primary. I guess the old saying is true: Those who can, teach. Those who cant make laws about teaching. Also, if this is how the Education Reform Commission is stacked, what do you think a TRS Reform Commission would look like?!!
