Today, Guru Pournami marked one of the most sacred days of the Hindu calender for those who have dedicated their lives to the pursuit of knowledge. The word Guru, now so popular throughout the world is exceedingly simple and brilliantly illustrative. Gu- means darkness. And Ru- means remover/dispeller. Thus, Guru, is one who leads the student, the spiritual or intellectual aspirant, from the darkness of ego, ignorance or pain, into the light of awakening, knowledge and self-realization. It is on this day, as ordained by the Saptarishis of past millenia, that the spiritual bonds between student and teacher are intensely strengthened and the path to knowledge is made visible to the student. On Guru Pournami, students offer prayers to the Guru, who on this day, becomes the representative of the divine on earth and blesses the student with fulfilment of all endeavours. For Indians following the spiritual path, all individuals are seen as embodiments of the divine, and each day is treated as the most sacred of days. On this day, I prostate myself before all my noble Gurus and preceptors who have made it possible for me to breathe and live, and walk the path less trodden. It was on this day that Saint Sandipani, the guru of Lord Krishna, bid his disciple goodbye after acknowledging that he only played a part in the divine drama enacted by Sri Krishna. It was then that Krishna promised to always remain with his Guru in every form, both divine and earthly and that too, as his disciple. Thus it is that each preceptor, acharya, or Guru must also see the disciple as an incarnation of the supreme Lord, or of the divine Mother come humbly disguised in the form of the student to test the knowledge of the potentially egoistic Gurus. This cosmic balance must always remain as both teacher and disciple see one another as the paths to their salvation and enlightenment. On this day I convey my heartfelt love to all of my students around the globe and trust that they maintained the stature of our sacred arts and precious work and accept my affection for their dedication. It is this humble teacher who knows without doubt that it is my student which personifies the most divine personality of God and appears in the doorway of my life to teach me love, patience and humility. Gurubhyo Namaha.
