Today Human Rights Watch released “Journalism is Not a Crime”: Violations of Media Freedom in Ethiopia documents the strategies used by the government to control independent reporting and analysis and restrict access to information since the last elections in 2010. It documents the 60 individuals who have fled Ethiopia since 2010, the trumped up criminal charges against six publications in 2014, and the flawed trials of bloggers and journalists. It also documents the effective yet subtle techniques including targeting of printing presses, distributors, and sources (particularly those that speak to journos outside of the country). Journalists and bloggers who are remotely critical of the government are harassed, threatened, and arrested or forced into exile, and self-censorship is rampant. The report is available at: hrw.org/node/132073 Press release at: hrw.org/node/132068 and in Amharic at: hrw.org/node/132068 Amharic summary and recs are attached and will be available online shortly, as will Afan Oromo.
