Today I am beyond disgusted. My 3rd grader (age 8) was sent home with an assignment to play a video game called Prodigy that helps students with math skills through achievement and assessment. The teacher/school did not seek parental permission. His teacher asked the kids to play it every day and let her know what they think. Well, the game is fun and like crack, as many other reward based video games are for young children, and it is not at all educational or even age appropriate. The informational materials sent home in my childs folder are basically marketing for the game, which was created by a former Wall St./hedge fund trader/engineer who does not have an educational background. The materials strongly suggest that parents buy the Premium Membership for a fee, in order to play longer and get additional game features, and makes all sorts of claims about skills improvement. Total snake oil. I wrote to the teacher to find out if this assignment came from DOE.
