Today I am “sort of” branching out a bit from yesterdays post with a song by Dutch rock guitarist, Adrian van den Berg. Having impressed David Coverdale with his guitar skills and his songwriting talent, Adrian van den Berg was originally asked to join Whitesnake in the early 1980’s. He initially declined but, finally gave in and agreed to join in 1987. At first he was hired as a session musician to help complete the album, Whitesnake, after a mass-firing of the original band members by David Coverdale. Although he contributed the guitar solo to their #1 hit “Here I Go Again”, guitarist John Sykes played all of the other rhythm and lead guitar on the album. After an extremely successful would tour with Whitesnake, along with David Coverdale, Adrian co-wrote all but one of the songs for the album Slip of the Tongue, all but one of the songs for the album Restless Heart, and half the songs on the live acoustic album Starkers in Tokyo. Due to a wrist injury, he was unable to contribute the guitar work on the album Slip of the Tongue but, his injury healed in enough time to tour with the band and support the album in a now trademark dual guitarist role with Steve Vai, who provided the guitar work on the Slip of the Tongue album. He contributed all of the guitar work on Restless Heart and collaborated with Coverdale on the unplugged acoustic album Starkers in Tokyo. Adrian van den Berg is best known for his tenure as one of the guitarists in Whitesnake but, he originally started his career as the lead guitarist with the Dutch band Teaser before forming his own band, Vandenberg. Vandenberg released three albums in the 1980’s. Their first album was recorded at Sol Studios, which is owned by former Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page, and in 1983 their first and best known single, “Burning Heart”, peaked at #39 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. Anyone remember this one? Enjoy!
