Today I am thankful for horses. My whole life has been influenced by the horse. I grew up horseback, we did everything horseback at home on the ranch, my grandparents put up hay with horses, my dad and grandpa worked teams when I was growing up as did the neighbors. We A.I.d horseback, we roped, we rodeoed, we doctored yearlings, we calved and branded horseback. Some of my best wounds, stories, and lessons were from horses. When I die, if I believed in reincarnation, I think I would come back as a bucking horse mare. I would love to be like Miss Congeniality. I love draft horses, bucking horses, pack horses, rope horses, pickup horses, race horses, rodeo horses, and even ponies and mules. Ive shed tears over horses. I have a pair of horse hide boots. My living has almost always had a direct connection with the horse. I went from the ranch, to college(rodeo scholarship), to daywork, to a saddle shop where I build paraphenalia for horses. I find it ironic that people talk about the horses under the hood. Ive learned and reinforced lessons in communication, in the circle of life, of living and dieing and playing and motherhood, and manners and respect and dignity. God Bless the horse for contributing to the decent human being in me.
